I love taking pictures of fireworks. So much so that we're likely gonna have a fireworks-photo troupe this summer. They're challenging to photograph for several reasons: metering is tough with foreground, background and blasting bright lights. If you have auto metering (i.e Tv/auto ISO whatever) then your images will vary greatly depending on when you pressed the shutter. Camera placement is important 'cause you can't have the camera moving while the shutter's open. The other neat challenge for us digital brats is that we don't have time to make decisions during the show for our settings, otherwise you miss half of it. There are probably some other things like white balance and timing that are important (ish). I like to set up the camera with a wild guess and snap away for the whole show: hope for the best.
Anyway, this is a one second shutter with my d10 point and shoot water/freezeproof camera (it froze later that night: freezeproof in japan is different than freezeproof in Canada.) I balanced the camera against a metal signpost on which my sweaty palm got stuck to.
